Make use of the free educational tools available to you.
“How can you squander even one more day not taking advantage of the greatest shifts of our generation? How dare you settle for less when the world has made it so easy for you to be remarkable?”
—Seth Godin
We also evolved into outstanding knowledge gatherers as a result of technological advancements. You can learn any topic using books, podcasts, journals, online classes, and resources that provide access to whomever you're trying to communicate with. There has never been a time in history when we have had such simple access to tools that can bolster our ability to learn. Imagine your great-great-grandparents finding out that you have all of this information.
They'd be surprised if you didn't spend the whole day reading and studying. In December 2013, I began drawing as an experiment. My initial thinking was, "I could take a couple of electives at my university," but one course would have cost me over $1,000. Instead, I went online and discovered a $20 portrait-drawing course on Skillshare. I went to YouTube and typed in "Drawing 101 ideas" and watched all of the videos that came up. On Instagram, I followed artists, researched their drawings, and watched time-lapse videos. I contacted a few artists and inquired about their work. I went out and bought some books and skimmed through them. Above all, I was the one who did the job. My attitude and technique changed as a result of the information I gained from these different sources.
The number of resources and platforms available to support self-directed learning is increasing every day. Websites such as CreativeLive, Skillshare, and Khan Academy provide educational content that is invaluable. It's easy to underestimate the importance of today's technologies and options in contrast to those of 20 years ago. Using them to your advantage.
